TABRIZ VASE CARPET, Northwest Persian
5' 8" x 9' 8"
173cm x 295cm
Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") With its immensely creative design, this singular antique carpet is a testament to the virtuoso level of skill that was occasionally achieved in the Tabriz workshops during the 19th century. Within a lush "Garden of Paradise" template, a towering ‘Tree of Life’ is carefully nurtured from the elaborate vase at bottom, its branches blooming into a variety of flowerheads and palmettes. Flanking each column of this phantasmagorical gardenscape are blazing, golden cypress trees trimmed in polychrome vinery. The carpet's exquisite, warm-hued palette is balanced by a bright azure blue palmette at the center of the tree that is echoed in the amphorae capitals at left and right. Very finely woven with a clarity of drawing and a wide hierarchy of scale, this piece offers staggering artistic expression and wonderful condition for special display in the home.
