At 130 to 145-year-old, the individual character and artistic command of this small rug’s overall presentation is of strong interest for collectors. From the striking and iconic Karagashli subgroup of the Kuba tradition, its indigo blue field presents a scattering of incredibly folkloric polychrome animal figures prancing amidst snowflake motifs and rare apple green deconstructed dragons. Animated by a deeply saturated crimson red, three abstracted split palmettes medallions are connected by a vertical axis of yet more stylized dragons, while a diversity of stars, diamonds and blossoms contribute to the general whimsy. The four-border suite that frames the composition is highlighted by a brilliant goldenrod border with a spacious rendition of a traditional 'leaf and calyx’ design.
